An 8 year study carried out in Naples run by the Second University of Naples, studied 215 people that had Type 2 diabetes. Some followed a Mediterranean diet and the others followed a low fat diet. The Mediterranean diet was low in carbohydrates, rich in vegetable sources of fat and was mainly plant based.

Results showed that participants were at a 56% lower risk of developing erectile dysfunction or female sexual dysfunction eating a Mediterranean diet rather than a low fat diet.

In addition, those that were already suffering from sexual dysfunction found that the risk of the men’s erectile dysfunction worsening was reduced by 59% and 50% for female sexual dysfunction.

This is the first long term study of this nature that confirmed that eating a Mediterranean type diet not only reduced the risk of developing sexual dysfunction but also reduced the deterioration in both men and women with newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes.
