Shelby is known as the ‘Diabetic Foodie’ and has an online recipe and food tips website for Diabetics. These are some tips for those that want to cut out their sugary drink intake which, for us all, is a good philosophy!

She suggests 7 tips to wean yourself off the sugary stuff!

1. Cut back slowly with your fizzy drinks reducing the amounts/day you are drinking gradually until you can live without them. Don’t swap to diet drinks as these are just as bad for you if not worse.

2. If you drink sports drinks and juices then always make sure they are 100% pure juice rather than with added sugar. Start to mix these drinks with water, reducing the amounts of juice you are adding gradually. You will then get to the stage where there is no juice left, only water!

3. To replace the ‘fizz’ from your fizzy you can always use soda water instead and add a lemon, lime or orange slice to add flavor.

4. Put a sign on the fridge that says ‘it takes 5 miles of walking or 50 minutes of running to burn off the calories in just one can of fizzy pop.

5. Try unsweetened tea. If you need to sweeten it to start with then use a little sweetner but then slowly phase that out. Fresh mint or lemon slices can be used to flavor instead.

6. When you get a craving for fizzy drinks or juices drink a glass of water first to see if that curbs the craving.

7. Always take a bottle of water or unsweetened iced tea in the car with you.
