Larval therapy, or Maggot Debridgement Therapy (MDT), has long been an approved and effective method for cleaning out and therefore aiding the healing of diabetic foot ulcers. The maggots eat only the dead and infected flesh of the wound, allowing the healthy tissues in the affected foot to heal the open wound more effectively.

However, the question of whether MDT actually speeds up the process of healing is one that is much debated. Because of this, a team at a University in New Zealand have developed genetically modified maggots that have the ability to do just that - speed up the body's process of healing. The larvae are able to produce and pass on a growth factor to the human flesh, which stimulates their cell growth and helps the wound heal. It's a fascinating development in the world of diabetic foot treatment, and even if the larvae are a little disconcerting, they could be a highly effective, quicker and cost effective way to treat foot ulcers associated with diabetic neuropathy.
